The Department of Conservation and Recreation seeks applicants for the position of Tractor Driver, Wachusett to perform the following duties:

General Statement of Job Duties and Responsibilities:

Incumbents of positions in this series operate equipment such as tractors, backhoes, front-end loaders and bulldozers used in the construction, maintenance and repair of roadways, grounds etc; operate heavy dump trucks, snow plows, sanders, tractor-drawn mowers and other equipment for roadways and grounds maintenance; operate light vehicles such as passenger cars and panel trucks for transporting personnel and materials; perform routine maintenance  on equipment; maintain record and prepare reports and perform related work as required.

The basic purpose of this work is to operate tractors used in maintaining roadsides, grounds and other projects.

Detailed Statement of Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  •  Operate tractor in cutting forest roads, dams, dikes and other areas.

  •  Operate tractor with flail mower attachment to cut brush on roadsides, dikes and other areas.

  •  Operate tractor with various other attachments to set fence posts and signs, chip brush and other uses.

  •  Drive dump trucks to haul equipment and materials to job sites.

  •  As needed and if required operate skid steer.

  •  If required, operate equipment such as backhoes and bulldozers.

  •  Perform other labor duties such as brush cutting, mowing, snow plowing, shoveling and furniture moving.

  •  Perform routine maintenance on vehicles and equipment such as fueling, lubricating, cleaning, checking tire pressure, battery etc.

  •  Maintains records and prepares reports on work progress, equipment maintenance and vehicle use.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of the operation and uses of tractors, bulldozers and similar equipment.

  • Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in connection with the care and maintenance of tractors and heavy equipment.

  • Knowledge of the laws, rules and regulations for operating heavy equipment and vehicles.

  • Knowledge of the safety precautions and procedures followed in equipment use.

  • Knowledge of the preventative maintenance procedures for tractors and other heavy equipment.

  • Skill in the operation of motor vehicles, tractors and heavy equipment such as backhoes and skid steers.

  • Ability to understand, explain and apply the provisions of the laws, rules, regulations, procedures, guidelines, specifications, policies and standards governing assigned unit activities.

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as plans, specifications, blueprints and drawings.

  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.

  • Ability to communicate effectively in oral expression. 

  • Ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with others.

 

 

 Qualifications First consideration will be given to those applicants that apply within the first 14 days. MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:None.  SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:  I. Possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Class B CDL License.  II. Possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Class 2B Hoisting License issued by the Department of Public Safety.
