The Deputy Warden 5 serves as a senior executive responsible for the safe, secure, and efficient operation of a maximum-security correctional institution. This position provides executive leadership over daily operations, inmate management, institutional security, emergency response, and interdepartmental coordination while serving as the Warden's chief advisor on operational and security matters.

The incumbent exercises Warden-level authority in the Warden's absence, directs institutional emergency response, oversees inmate classification and work assignments, coordinates critical operations across all departments, and ensures compliance with departmental policies and correctional standards.

Ideal candidates possess strong correctional leadership experience, exceptional decision-making skills, the ability to manage complex operations, and a commitment to safety, accountability, and operational excellence.

Examples of dutiesThree years of the required experience for the following minimum qualifications must have been at the managerial level or above with direct-line supervisory responsibility over two or more subordinates:

Five years of supervisory-level experience in a correctional institution, penal institution, or prison enterprises plus one of the following:

1. Six years of full-time experience in any field; or
2. A bachelor's degree.

OR

A master's degree plus four years of supervisory-level experience in a correctional institution, penal institution, or prison enterprises; OR

A doctorate plus three years of supervisory-level experience in a correctional institution, penal institution, or prison enterprises.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:
An applicant who has been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence or a felony, or who is under indictment on a felony charge will be disqualified until relief from the disabilities imposed by State and Federal laws is granted.

In accordance with the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) (Part 115:17) of Title 28 of the Code of Federal Regulations an applicant who has been found to have engaged in any form of sexual abuse; engaged in sexual activity in the community facilitated by force, overt or implied threats of force, or coercion, or if the victim did not consent or was unable or refused will be disqualified. Job Duties:

  • Direct Institution Operations – Provide executive oversight of daily institutional operations, ensuring the safe, secure, and efficient management of all correctional programs and services. 
  • Oversee Security and Emergency Response – Direct institutional security operations, respond to emergencies, and exercise Warden-level authority during escapes, disturbances, hostage situations, and other critical incidents. 
  • Manage Inmate Population and Assignments – Review inmate work assignments, housing placements, classification recommendations, and population movement to maximize operational efficiency while maintaining appropriate security. 
  • Coordinate Executive Leadership and Operations – Coordinate activities among all departments, resolve operational issues, advise the Warden on policy and security matters, and ensure compliance with departmental procedures. 
  • Represent the Institution – Serve as the primary liaison with staff, inmates, families, law enforcement agencies, community partners, and governmental officials to promote effective communication, resolve issues, and support institutional objectives.

Appointment Type: DETAIL OF A permanent, classified employee of LA DPS&C - CORRECTIONS SERVICES (Adult DOC)

  • An employee selected for detail may be permanently promoted to this position if a position becomes available.
