As a Sanitarian Manager/Supervisor, you’ll lead critical environmental health programs that protect the health and safety of communities across Louisiana. This dynamic role oversees areas such as retail food safety, drinking water, sewer systems, and institutional health while providing leadership, conducting inspections and investigations, and supporting enforcement activities. This position requires routine statewide duties, including fieldwork, inspections, investigations, or direct services that extend beyond the employee’s domicile parish. These statewide responsibilities are an inherent and ongoing part of the job and may require frequent travel.

Examples of dutiesPossession of a current Louisiana Sanitarian's license plus one of the following:

Four years of experience as a sanitarian; OR

A master's degree in public health, food science, dairy science, environmental or sanitary science, or one of the physical or biological sciences plus three years of experience as a sanitarian.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Positions in the Molluscan Shellfish program require that applicants complete the Louisiana Boating Education program and be certified by the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries.   • Plans, implements, supervises, and evaluates environmental health services and activities performed by parish sanitarian staff to ensure effective delivery of required programs and services. 
  • Provides direct supervision to subordinate sanitarians, including establishing performance expectations, evaluating work performance, conducting performance appraisals, approving leave and travel, identifying training needs, and recommending disciplinary actions when appropriate. 
  • Oversees staff workload, field activities, inspection frequencies, reports, time and attendance records, travel documentation, and other administrative requirements to ensure accuracy and compliance with agency policies. 
  • Manages environmental health applications, permits, fees, inspections, and records associated with individual sewerage systems, private water wells, retail food establishments, and other regulated programs. 
  • Conducts and oversees field inspections, investigations, monitoring activities, site evaluations, complaint investigations, food recalls, and enforcement actions in accordance with applicable local, state, and federal regulations. 
  • Provides technical assistance, training, consultation, and guidance to staff, individuals, community partners, elected officials, and government agencies regarding environmental health programs and concerns. 
  • Directs parish Sanitarian Services during post-disaster response activities, maintains staff readiness and emergency contact information, and coordinates environmental health services following natural or man-made disasters.
