ROLE DESCRIPTION - Intern, Manufacturing Automation Engineer 

The Manufacturing Automation Engineering Intern will support the design, development, implementation, and sustainment of automated and semi-automated manufacturing solutions that improve production efficiency, quality, safety, and cost. The internship provides hands-on exposure to manufacturing automation technologies throughout the manufacturing lifecycle, from concept and feasibility studies through deployment, validation, and continuous improvement.

The intern will contribute to the integration of production equipment, automation systems, MES platforms, and enterprise applications through machine connectivity, data acquisition, and digital manufacturing initiatives. Working closely with Production, Design Engineering, Quality, IT, and external suppliers, the intern will support the development of robust, scalable, and maintainable automation solutions that contribute to SES's manufacturing roadmap.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES / KEY RESULT AREAS

  • Support the design, development, implementation, and maintenance of automation and machine connectivity solutions, enabling secure and scalable integration between production equipment, PLCs, MES, databases, enterprise applications, and digital manufacturing platforms.
  • Assist in identifying automation opportunities to improve productivity, quality, ergonomics, safety, and cost.
  • Support automation feasibility studies, business case preparation, and ROI analyses.
  • Assist in specifying, selecting, testing, and integrating automation equipment, controls, software, and connectivity solutions.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of automation-related documentation, including system architectures, functional specifications, and operating procedures.
  • Support commissioning, validation, and ramp-up activities for automated production systems.
  • Assist in troubleshooting automation, connectivity, and control-system-related issues.
  • Collaborate with production, process, quality, and IT teams to support seamless system integration.
  • Support machine data acquisition, traceability, and digital manufacturing initiatives.
  • Participate in coordination activities with external suppliers and system integrators.
  • Support compliance with safety regulations, machine directives, and quality standards.
  • Contribute to automation upgrades, continuous improvement projects, and manufacturing digitalization initiatives.
  • Support the standardization and digitalization of automation platforms and controls.

COMPETENCIES, QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

  • Basic understanding of industrial automation, controls engineering, and manufacturing systems.
  • Exposure to industrial communication protocols such as OPC UA, MQTT, TCP/IP, REST APIs, Modbus, OpenProtocol, or similar technologies.
  • Interest in system integration, manufacturing connectivity, and digital manufacturing solutions.
  • Understanding of OT/IT integration concepts, industrial connectivity architectures, and Industrial IoT (IIoT) platforms such as Kepware, Ignition, or similar technologies is desirable.
  • Ability to analyze technical problems and contribute to practical automation solutions.
  • Structured problem-solving and analytical thinking skills.
  • Strong willingness to learn and develop technical skills in manufacturing automation and digitalization.
  • Continuous improvement mindset with a focus on reliability and maintainability.

Education

  • Currently pursuing or recently completed a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Automation Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Manufacturing Engineering, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, or a related field.

Preferred Experience

  • Academic, laboratory, personal, or internship experience related to automation, robotics, industrial software, IoT, manufacturing systems, or data acquisition.
  • Exposure to software development or scripting using Python, JavaScript, Node.js, or similar technologies is desirable.
  • Familiarity with software development lifecycle practices, including Git, CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and release management is a plus.
  • Knowledge of robotics, PLCs, HMIs, sensors, and vision systems is a plus
  • Familiarity with MES, production data collection, industrial connectivity, or manufacturing digitalization concepts is considered a plus.
  • Exposure to databases, SQL, data visualization, or industrial data management is an advantage.
  • Familiarity with safety standards, machine directives, and risk-assessment principles is desirable.
  • Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, cleanroom practices, or related methodologies is a plus.
  • Fluency in English; additional languages are an advantage.

OTHER KEY REQUIREMENTS / COMMENTS

  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, production-driven environment.
  • Strong communication skills to collaborate across engineering, production, quality, IT, and supplier teams.
  • Willingness to spend time on the shop floor supporting commissioning, testing, and manufacturing activities.
  • Curiosity and enthusiasm for Industrial IoT, machine connectivity, smart manufacturing, and Industry 4.0 technologies.
