Job Summary:  The Safety Officer - Sergeant will monitor and supervise safety officers and, as needed, will work in the capacity and relief of a safety officer if no substitute is available to enforce institutional policies and procedures to protect school property and ensure a safe working/educational environment for staff and students.

Essential Job Functions: 

  1. Monitors and supervises activities of safety officers to enforce institutional policies and procedures to protect school property and ensure a safe working/educational environment for staff and students
  2. Arranges work schedules of assigned safety officers to cover shifts
  3. Reviews essential information, conducts briefing sessions, answers questions, and participates in discussion of safety and pertinent information
  4. Position is considered a working sergeant and in the event of safety staff shortages, the sergeant will work in the capacity and relief of safety officers if no substitute is available
  5. Analyzes reports prepared and submitted by safety officers for accuracy and completeness and ensures reports have essential elements, fundamental soundness, and substantiation of actions taken
  6. Assists in disseminating information regarding applicable new/revised policies and procedures to safety officers and explains implications
  7. Analyzes difficult situations or problems presented by safety officers and recommends action to be taken or appropriate method or procedure to use
  8. Compiles information for and writes reports on activities and recommendations to be submitted to safety coordinators and/or director of safety
  9. Analyzes daily reports to determine levels of performance or need for corrective action
  10. Attends safety staff meetings, gives and receives information, participates in problem solving, and recommends policy changes and program development to director of safety
  11. Provides statistical information to the security operations center (SOC) analyst and safety administrators
  12. Assists staff in investigation of incidents and safety concerns
  13. Trains newly-hired safety staff and continues on-the-job training and coaching

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. One to three (1 � 3) years work experience in a safety officer position
  2. Successful completion of the Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy as administered by the Ohio Attorney General through the Ohio Peace Officer raining Commission Certification, or a minimum of a two-year degree in criminal justice, police science, psychology, sociology, or equivalent years of experience
  3. Possess a valid Ohio driver's license
  4. Ability to deal with the public tactfully and courteously and to work harmoniously with parents, students, staff, and the community
  5. Pass state-mandated criminal background checks
  6. Pass school district's drug screening
  7. Possess an understanding and knowledge of safety and first aid as it applies to students
  8. Maintain certification in First Aid and CPR
  9. Maintain district's yearly training online safety trainings

Days/Hours:  8 hours per day, 206 days per year (number of work days for current school year will be pro-rated to date-of-hire)

Hourly Rate 2026/27 SY:  New Hire = $19.47 per hour, plus an additional $1.25 per hour  (NOTE: salary schedule includes increases after Year 1, 2, and 3)
