Position Summary
Texas Materials is seeking a dependable and safety-focused Backhoe/Broom Operator to support construction, paving, and roadway maintenance operations. This position is responsible for operating backhoes and power broom equipment to perform excavation, trenching, material handling, site cleanup, and roadway sweeping activities. The ideal candidate will have experience operating heavy equipment in a construction environment and a strong commitment to safety, quality, and teamwork.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Safely operate backhoe and broom equipment in support of construction and paving projects.
- Perform excavation, trenching, grading, backfilling, and material handling activities.
- Operate power broom equipment to clean roads, paving surfaces, shoulders, and construction areas.
- Remove debris, dirt, excess aggregate, and other materials to prepare surfaces for paving or project completion.
- Assist paving, utility, site development, and maintenance crews as needed.
- Read and follow project plans, grade stakes, and supervisor instructions.
- Conduct daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections of equipment.
- Complete equipment inspection and maintenance reports accurately.
- Perform routine preventive maintenance, cleaning, and lubrication of assigned equipment.
- Maintain awareness of underground utilities, overhead obstructions, and nearby personnel.
- Follow all company safety policies, OSHA regulations, and environmental guidelines.
- Communicate effectively with supervisors, crew members, truck drivers, and other equipment operators.
- Assist with general labor duties when equipment operation is not required.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
Education
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
Experience
- Minimum of 2 years of experience operating backhoe equipment preferred.
- Experience operating construction sweepers or power broom equipment preferred.
- Experience in road construction, asphalt paving, utility work, or heavy civil construction preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of safe heavy equipment operating procedures.
- Ability to operate backhoes and power broom equipment efficiently and safely.
- Understanding of excavation, trenching, utility installation, and roadway construction practices.
- Ability to recognize hazardous conditions and follow safe work procedures.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Commitment to quality workmanship and production efficiency.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
- Ability to sit and operate equipment for extended periods.
- Ability to climb on and off equipment safely throughout the workday.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds occasionally.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, and perform physical labor as required.
- Sufficient vision, hearing, and coordination to safely operate heavy equipment.
- Outdoor construction and roadway environments.
- Exposure to dust, noise, vibration, traffic, and changing weather conditions.
- Work near moving machinery, active construction zones, and public roadways.
- Overtime, weekend work, and travel between project sites may be required.
