This position is located at the SC Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities (BHDD) - Office of Mental Health, Waccamaw Center for Mental Health, 164 Waccamaw Medical Park Drive, Conway, SC 29526.

As the Registered Nurse, under general supervision, you will plan, implement and provide direct nursing care to all patients of Waccamaw Center for Mental Health. In collaboration with the treatment team, you will evaluate the effectiveness of care/interventions and discharge planning.

Responsibilities for the Registered Nurse include:

  • Provide psychiatric nursing services to all patients with chronic and persistent mental illnesses, adults and children/adolescents with severe emotional disturbances. Services may include making observations, administering medications (oral and injections), providing counseling and education to patients and families, and utilizing other appropriate resources as needed. Perform urine drug screens and other necessary tasks as requested by immediate supervisor and Clinic Director. Yearly anticipated Patient Care Hours are 854.
  • Complete and submit clinical services notes within a 24 - hour period in accordance with Local Collaborative Documentation Standards.
  • Maintain documentation of charts zed other records in accordance with State, Federal, Local, OMH, WCMB, Quality Assurance, Corporate Compliance and CARF Standards.
  • Work directly with staff psychiatrists/ physicians to coordinate medication needs and address medication concerns. Assist in getting patients approved/renewed in patient assistance programs for medications. Work on Prior authorizations with insurance companies. Participate in treatment team meeting to gain assistance in the formulation and implementation of these plans. Promote and help maintain the health of individuals and families through teaching, counseling and rehabilitative measures. Coordinate needed community supports and works closely with Community Support Staff members.
  • Assist in all the operations and organization of the medical supply room. Ensure medications are accounted for and processed/logged correctly. Ordermediations as needed, to help with the maintaining of the room, such as verifying expiration dates of medications.
Examples of duties
  • Graduation from an accredited school or nursing.
  • A bachelor's degree in nursing and two (2) years of experience; OR a three (3) year diploma and two (2) years of experience; OR an associate degree in nursing and two (2) years of experience as a registered nurse, one of which must have been in a community mental health program. 
  • Licensed as a registered nurse by the South Carolina Board of Nursing. 
  • Must be able to meet OMH credentialing requirements.
Additional Requirements
  • Must have a valid driver's license and provide a 10-year driving record to operate a state vehicle and satisfy requirements of this position. 
  • Hear at normal volumes, stand, walk reach pull, stoop, bend.
  • Ability to lift 40 pounds and climb 2 flights of stairs.

Qualifications
  • Bilingual abilities in English and Spanish (or another language) are a plus.
Supplemental information

Post hire, employees must: 

  • Be able to pass CPR, First -Aid and Managing Agitation in the Psychiatric Setting (MAPS) Certification. 
  • Knowledge of the services provided in a comprehensive mental health program serving children and families and adults.
  • Have extensive skills in coordinating services with otherhealth and community organizations.
  • The ability to establish and maintain satisfactory working relationships with employees.
  • The ability to establish and maintain working relationships with patients and families.
