Lead environmental health efforts that make a lasting impact on communities across Louisiana. As a Sanitarian 5, you'll oversee critical public health programs, manage environmental health operations, and ensure compliance with regulations that protect the health and safety of residents and visitors. This leadership role offers the opportunity to supervise staff, conduct meaningful field work, and travel throughout the state while advancing public health initiatives that truly make a difference.
Examples of dutiesPossession of a current Louisiana Sanitarian's license plus one of the following:Four years of experience as a sanitarian; OR
A master's degree in public health, food science, dairy science, environmental or sanitary science, or one of the physical or biological sciences plus three years of experience as a sanitarian.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Positions in the Molluscan Shellfish program require that applicants complete the Louisiana Boating Education program and be certified by the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries. - Plan, direct, and evaluate parish environmental health programs to ensure effective delivery of services that protect public health and comply with state regulations.
- Supervise, mentor, and evaluate environmental health staff, including hiring, training, performance management, scheduling, leave approvals, and recommending disciplinary actions.
- Oversee administrative operations by maintaining program records, preparing required reports, processing applications and fees, and ensuring timely completion of regulatory documentation.
- Coordinate environmental health inspections and permitting activities for retail food establishments, private water wells, and individual sewerage systems while ensuring compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
- Monitor staff workloads, inspection frequencies, travel activities, and performance metrics to promote efficient operations and high-quality customer service.
- Conduct field inspections, investigations, and enforcement activities, including complaint investigations, food safety actions, disease outbreak response, and post-disaster public health assessments.
- Provide technical guidance and represent the Office of Public Health by collaborating with community partners, government agencies, and elected officials, delivering public health education, and supporting regulatory and legal proceedings as needed.
