Examples of duties
  • Provides exceptional customer service by assisting patrons with library services, materials, and resources in a courteous and professional manner

  • Performs circulation functions, including checking library materials in and out, registering new library accounts, and updating existing patron records

  • Explains library policies, collects fines and fees, and assists patrons with account-related questions

  • Assists customers with author, title, and subject searches and places holds on unavailable materials

  • Answers telephone inquiries, responds to general questions, and directs customers to the appropriate staff or department as needed

  • Promotes library programs, services, and resources to encourage community engagement and participation

  • Maintains library collections by processing new materials, performing light repairs, replacing damaged cases, updating call numbers, and cleaning library materials

  • Monitors and fulfills material requests by retrieving items from library shelves, maintaining hold shelves, and ensuring timely access to library resources

  • Maintains library inventory by processing magazines and newspapers, distributing mail, ordering supplies, and supporting collection maintenance activities, including shelf reading and weeding

  • Creates attractive merchandising displays to highlight library collections and processes withdrawn materials for public sale in accordance with library procedures

QualificationsHigh school diploma or GED and one (1) year of public contact experience and familiarity with basic library procedures and a demonstrated knowledge of computers.  Must be able to spell accurately and possess keyboarding skills. Supplemental information
  • Knowledge of library policies and procedures related to library card registration, public computer use, and fee assessments

  • Knowledge of library collections, resources, and services to effectively assist patrons

  • Knowledge of the online public catalog and library website resources

  • Skill in operating library equipment and technology, including photocopiers, fax machines, change machines, public computer reservation software, room reservation software, self-checkout machines, and library automation systems

  • Skill in utilizing the online public catalog to locate materials and assist customers with information requests

  • Ability to maintain accurate records, compile statistics, and prepare routine reports

  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions while maintaining attention to detail

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with customers, co-workers, and the public

  • Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships while providing exceptional customer service

  • Ability to adapt to changing technologies, library procedures, and customer service needs in a fast-paced environment

Conditions of Employment:

In accordance with Session Law 2025-16, candidates selected for positions involving work with children in any capacity will be required to undergo a fingerprint-based criminal history check conducted by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI).

Successful candidates who receive a conditional offer of employment with Cumberland County must pass pre-employment screenings, including criminal history checks and drug screenings, as required by Cumberland County Policies and Procedures, prior to beginning work or receiving a final offer of employment. Refusal to submit to testing or testing positive for prohibited substances will result in the withdrawal of the conditional employment offer.
