About This Position:
Join DOTD’s Ferry Operations team and play an important role in providing safe and reliable transportation across Louisiana’s waterways. The Marine Deckhand position supports daily ferry operations by assisting with the safe movement of passengers, vehicles, and equipment while performing vessel safety checks, maintenance activities, and emergency response duties.
This hands-on position offers the opportunity to work as part of a dedicated marine crew, develop specialized maritime skills, and help ensure dependable ferry service for the traveling public. Individuals in this role should enjoy working outdoors, working as part of a team, and performing a variety of operational tasks in a marine environment.
While in official capacity, DOTD employees must comply with applicable Louisiana and Civil Services laws, rules and regulations, as well as DOTD policies, procedures, manuals, and directives.

- Operates as a member of a ferry vessel crew by assisting with passenger and vehicle transportation, collecting tolls, maintaining accurate counts, and ensuring safe boarding and unloading operations.
- Performs vessel operations and maintenance activities, including handling mooring lines, operating ramps and gates, assisting with docking procedures, and maintaining vessel equipment and work areas.
- Conducts safety checks, serves as a designated crew member, assists with emergency response procedures, and supports the safe navigation and operation of the vessel.
- Provides lead worker support by assisting with training and guidance of lower-level deckhands while participating in required training, drills, and other operational duties.

Appointment Type: Probational, Promotional, or Job Appointment
Career Progression: This position may be filled as a as Ferryboat Deckhand 1, 2, or 3 depending on the level of experience of the selected applicant(s).
Compensation: Below is the starting hourly rate and premium pay amount for each level.
- Ferryboat Deckhand 1-1,284.80/ bi-weekly
- FerryboatDeckhand 2-1,374.40/ bi-weekly
- FerryboatDeckhand 3 -1,573.60/ bi-weekly
- Premium Pay for Hours Actually Worked of $2.00/Hour
- Shift Differential Pay of $1.75/Hour
