DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES / ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The Houston Parks and Recreation Department is dedicated to building a sustainable community and enhance the quality of urban life by providing safe well-maintained parks and offering affordable programming for our community. To achieve this mission, HPARD is seeking an Equipment Worker
(Heavy) to join its Greenspace team.
Potential Candidate will play a key role in:
- Operate heavy equipment and trucks, i.e. aerial lift vehicles, removal dumps, loaders, booms, chippers, chipper trucks, stump grinders; and other equipment, i.e. saws, etc. to remove dangerous, fading, and lifeless trees and limbs.
- Perform a variety of manual tasks and activities, i.e. planting, climbing, and pruning trees, etc.
- Trim and remove trees along streets, parks, private properties, and public grounds to eliminate
- hazardous conditions, prevent interference with traffic, traffic signals, traffic signs, and overhead utility lines; and grinds stumps to eliminate trip hazards on public property.
- Maintain, clean and service equipment, vehicles, tools and work area. Inspects vehicles for required supplies, materials and equipment.
- Observe and follow safety procedures and precautions at work-sites.
- Report to work during all significant weather events or random incidents.
- Maintains, cleans and services equipment, vehicles, and tools.
- Inspects vehicles for required supplies, materials and equipment needed for assignments.
- Observes and always follows safety procedures and precautions.
- Prepares and maintains reports, forms, and records. May act as a lead of a crew and coordinate and monitor work assignments and personnel.
- Must be available to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- This position is designated among essential personnel under the City of Houston’s Emergency Management Policy
PHYSICAL EFFORT:
The position requires stooping, bending and/or lifting of items of up to 30 pounds with occasional periods of walking on rough surfaces.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
There are routine exposures to significant levels of heat, cold, moisture and air pollution. The position may involve periodic exposure to chemical substances and physical trauma of a minor nature such as cuts, bruises and minor burns.
PHYSICAL SKILL:
Requires the ability to make fairly complex coordinated and sequenced motor movements in response to quickly changing external stimuli. Examples of dutiesEDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to read, write, add, subtract and follow oral and/or basic written instructions as might normally be acquired through 9 to 11 years of formal schooling.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Six months of experience in the operation of plant or automotive equipment and attachments are required.
LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
May be required to have a valid Class A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and comply with the City of Houston's policy on driving based on the type of equipment the individual is assigned to operate.
Qualifications
- Applicants who can work Day, Evening, Night, Weekend, and Holiday Shifts are highly preferred.
- Applicants with experience using the following equipment are highly preferred:
- Prentice loader, aerial lift, dump truck, stump grinder, chainsaw, and power polesaw.
SELECTION / SKILLS TESTS REQUIRED
The selection process will involve application review and/or Interview. The department may administer skills assessment test.
SAFETY IMPACT POSITION - YES
If yes, this position is subject to random drug testing and if a promotional position, candidate must pass an assignment drug test.
PAY GRADE - 13
