We are looking for a talented American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreter for the school year.
Hourly Rate Range: $55.00-$70.00 per hour
Responsibilities would include:
- Provide orientation and mobility (O&M) instruction to students who are blind or visually impaired in accordance with their Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
- Assess students' orientation and mobility needs and develop individualized instructional goals and service plans.
- Teach safe and effective travel skills, including the use of long canes, public transportation, environmental awareness, and route planning.
- Instruct students in spatial concepts, sensory awareness, orientation techniques, and independent travel skills in school, home, community, and vocational settings.
- Conduct functional mobility assessments and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to support student independence and educational success.
- Participate in IEP meetings, evaluations, and parent conferences to provide recommendations related to orientation and mobility services.
- Collaborate with Teachers of Students with Visual Impairments (TVIs), general education teachers, related service providers, and families to ensure students receive appropriate accommodations and support.
- Maintain accurate documentation, service logs, progress reports, and records in compliance with the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE), IDEA, and applicable state and federal regulations.
- Stay current on best practices, assistive technology, and advancements in orientation and mobility instruction.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Orientation and Mobility, Visual Impairment, Special Education, or a related field from an accredited college or university.
- Current certification as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist through the Academy for Certification of Vision Rehabilitation & Education Professionals (ACVREP).
- Pennsylvania teaching certification in Visual Impairment is preferred if required by the employing school district or intermediate unit.
- Experience providing orientation and mobility services to children and adolescents in educational settings preferred.
- Knowledge of assistive technology, adaptive travel techniques, and best practices for students with visual impairments.
- Successful completion of required fingerprinting, criminal background checks, and all Pennsylvania pre-employment clearances.
