Position Overview
The Mechanic is responsible for performing inspections, completing preventative maintenance, and diagnosing and repairing vehicle deficiencies on trucks, on-highway end dump trucks, tractors and trailers and heavy construction equipment. All duties must be performed in compliance with company policies and established workplace safety standards.
Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)
- Operates and inspect machines and equipment to diagnose defects.
- Troubleshoot problems, making economical and durable repairs.
- Dismantling and reassembling equipment, using hoists and hand tools.
- Examine parts for damage or excessive wear, using micrometers and gauges.
- Replace defective engines and subassemblies, such as transmissions, electric motors, drums, seals, hydraulic pumps, valves, pistons, rods, gears, crankshafts, cylinder blocks, etc.
- Tests overhauled equipment to ensure operating efficiency (must be able to operate all equipment).
- Welds broken parts and structural members.
- Performs record keeping of time and parts used on the appropriate forms.
- Plans work procedures and/or possible solutions such as part redesign, substitution of material or parts and rearrangement of parts or subassemblies.
- Performs general cleaning of work areas and maintenance areas.
- Assists other maintenance department staff in performing the duties necessary to assure the efficiency of operations of vehicles.
- Other duties as assigned.

Education/Experience
- High School diploma or general education degree (GED) required.
- 1-3 years’ experience in heavy truck and equipment experience preferred.
Work Requirements
- Must be 18 years in age or older.
- Must pass pre-employment drug screen and criminal background check.
- Must maintain current driver’s license that meets state requirements. Class B CDL preferred.
- Responsible for furnishing own tools.
- Strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures as outlined in the Employee Handbook.
- Willingness to work in a team environment and assist co-workers or supervisors with other duties as required.
- Regular and consistent attendance is required and must be willing to work nights, weekends and holidays when necessary.
- Compliance with all OSHA and/or MSHA regulations, and adherence to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations as set forth by the US DOT

- Able to identify, define, and resolve problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions independently.
- Able to interpret an extensive variety of instructions in mathematical, written or oral form.
- Knowledge of hazards and safety precautions common to equipment operations.
- Ability to read, write and do basic mathematical calculations to keep time and material records.
- Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing.
- Ability to perform multiple tasks effectively with a focus on timeliness and responsiveness.
- Capable of utilizing the internet effectively for research, evaluation, and repair completion.
- Ability to operate various types of heavy equipment that may include but not limited to a Car and Truck.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions to complete assigned tasks.
- Willingness and ability to work in and adapt to changes in circumstances, tasks, customer needs and other conditions that may affect their daily responsibilities.
- Ability to cope well in stressful environments and communicate professionally.
Physical Requirements

- The employee is frequently required to sit, reach, use hands to hold, grasp, turn and handle equipment and/or tools.
- The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, balance, crawl, kneel, crouch, bend, push, pull and climb stairs, ladders, inclined walkways and access elevated platforms.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision and depth perception.
- Able to climb ladders and to work at heights as well as work in tight quarters.
- Able to regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
Work Environment
While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles and outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud. A variety of noise levels, adverse weather conditions, and complex job sites are to be expected daily. Proper clothing, PPE (personal protective equipment) is required, and safety precautions should be taken to ensure your safety, and the safety of others in all conditions.
