All candidates must be eligible to work and live in the U.S Department Campus Dining - Rivers Street Cafe - 170350 Primary Purpose of Position The primary purpose of the Food Service Technician is to perform a range of non-skilled to semi-skilled services to support the operations of the unit. Minimum Qualifications Experience in food preparation or service activities in a commercial kitchen; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

License/Certification Required Essential Job Functions Duties of the position may include:

  • Maintaining all university specifications pertaining to production and service.
  • Control proper usage and rotation of food.
  • Ensure food quality and appearance on buffet.
  • Alert Chef or direct supervisor to any food quality issues that could hurt culinary operations.
  • Maintain walk-in coolers and food storage areas daily.
  • Maintain a neat, clean, and sanitary workstation.
  • The person selected must follow cleaning and sanitation procedures and other duties as assigned by a supervisor.
  • Serves appropriate portion sizes determined by Unit Management.
  • Working in Rivers St. Cafe between multiple stations and duties and other areas as needed.
  • Operates commercial food equipment, Follows health laws in the preparation, holding, and storing of food.
  • Adhere to standardized recipes and portion control.

All ASU Food Service employees are required to work during home football games or any other special campus event as needed. Campus work location may vary depending on the event. Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Required for this Position
  • Knowledge of methods of preparation and cooking of food in quantity lots.
  • Knowledge of the uses of various pieces of equipment, including but not limited to steamers, steam pots, fryers, grills, slicers, and ovens.
  • Ability to maintain high standards of personal cleanliness as well as food sanitation.
  • The job requires attention to detail, initiative, and decision-making capabilities.
  • Team player attitude and superior customer service skills are required.
  • Initiative to work beyond what is requested within the unit to achieve business goals of quality and service standards.
  • Knowledge of basic math and ability to portion serving sizes as needed.
  • Ability to interact effectively with coworkers of diverse ages, backgrounds, and interests.
  • Ability to work as a team member under rushed conditions without loss of efficiency or effectiveness.
  • Strong customer service skills, the ability to follow written and verbal instructions, and the ability to prepare and serve food while adhering to Appalachian State Campus Dining, and the State Board of Health regulations.
  • Demonstrates engaging customer service to the Appalachian community.
Preferred Qualifications 2+ years of related experience;
Culinary School/ACF Certification; and
Obtain ServSafe certification within 1 year of employment Required Functional Competencies to Successfully Perform Job Duties. Knowledge / Technical: Prepare foods according to recipes and modified diet requirements. Control food waste and product quality through accurate weighing, measuring, and combining ingredients. Organize and stock the kitchen/unit. Follow all applicable health, safety, and sanitation guidelines. Ensure the proper temperature of food is reached and maintained.

Interpersonal Skills: Work as a team member, developing and maintaining effective working relationships. Interacts with others in the work area in a respectful manner that encourages communication and the accomplishment of work tasks. Leads and motivates co-workers and helps others learn and problem-solve. Crosses work units when problem-solving by assisting or working in other dining locations as needed.

Safety and Health Compliance:
Identifies and appropriately operates all kitchen equipment and machinery. Cleans and sanitizes assigned work areas and equipment in accordance with departmental sanitation guidelines. Follow State Policies and Procedures, University Policies and Procedures, Food Services Policies and Procedures, and Address Health Department requirements when applicable. Attend appropriate, required safety training offered by ASU and OSHA. Type of Position Permanent Full-Time Staff/Non-Faculty Staff/Non-Faculty Appointment Type 1.0 Work Schedule/Hours Campus Dining is a Sunday – Saturday, 6:00 am – 11:00 pm operation. Operations are reduced during university breaks. Employees are scheduled two days off each week based on business need. Days off may not be consecutive days off.
Several shifts available depending on business needs and availability.

Two days will be given off. Weekends are a must. Employee may be required to work at least three home football games and/or any other special campus event. Schedules will be adjusted as needed to provide coverage for these events.

Overall Competency Level Contributing Salary Grade Equivalency Salary Range Anticipated Hiring Range $35,845 Pay will be commensurate with applicant competencies, budget, equity and market considerations.
