Data Platform Engineer - Data License Plus Location Dublin Business Area Engineering and CTO Ref # 10052916 Description & Requirements Bloomberg's Enterprise Data business builds the technology supply chains that source, model, link and deliver large volumes of financial data for operational, analytical and research workflows, while maintaining transparency, quality and control.
Data License Plus (DL+) is a fully managed service that hosts, organises and links Data License content into a unified model and publishes refreshed, ready-to-use data to client cloud platforms. The Infrastructure Platforms team builds the shared services that DL+ engineering depends on and is moving from manual, ticket-based operations towards automated self-service platforms.
The Data Platform Engineer will own and evolve the database and search platform layer supporting DL+ and related data workloads. Oracle is the primary accountability: availability, performance, capacity, lifecycle, security, backup and recovery, and the automation that makes those capabilities repeatable.
The role also requires credible production experience in at least one adjacent platform: PostgreSQL or a distributed search/indexing technology such as Elasticsearch, OpenSearch or Solr. This is a platform engineering role, not only an application DBA position; success means turning specialist knowledge into dependable services, standards and self-service tooling.

We'll trust you to:
  • Own the Oracle platform lifecycle — set standards for architecture, provisioning, configuration, patching, upgrades, capacity, maintenance and decommissioning across on-premise and hybrid environments.
  • Engineer for performance and scale — diagnose and resolve database performance issues across the stack using general database tuning principles (query optimization, indexing) while collaborating with application and infrastructure teams to address root causes at the right layer.
  • Build resilience and recoverability — operate backup, restore, replication, high-availability, failover and disaster-recovery capabilities; define and test RPO and RTO expectations.
  • Automate and enable self-service — use scripting, Infrastructure-as-Code and CI/CD to replace manual runbooks with safe workflows for provisioning, access, maintenance, validation and recovery.
  • Support adjacent data technologies — contribute to the operation and standardisation of PostgreSQL and Elasticsearch, OpenSearch or Solr platforms while keeping Oracle as the primary responsibility.
  • Lead migrations and platform change — plan version upgrades, schema moves, database splits or consolidations, data movement and low-risk cutovers with validation and rollback plans.
  • Instrument and secure the service — establish dashboards, alerts, baselines and SLOs, and apply least privilege, secrets, encryption, auditing, vulnerability and patch controls as platform defaults.
  • Improve reliability — support incidents, lead root-cause analysis and problem management, reduce operational toil, and partner with Linux, storage, network, security and application teams.

You'll need to have:
  • Substantial hands-on experience operating Oracle databases in business-critical production environments at platform, database engineering or senior DBA level.
  • Strong Oracle architecture and lifecycle knowledge covering high availability, backup and recovery, patching, upgrades, capacity planning and performance.
  • The ability to diagnose complex Oracle performance problems using database diagnostics and system evidence, then explain the findings clearly.
  • Production experience with at least one adjacent platform: PostgreSQL or Elasticsearch, OpenSearch, Solr or an equivalent search/indexing technology.
  • Strong Linux fundamentals, particularly RHEL, including storage, filesystems, networking, process and memory behaviour, and I/O troubleshooting.
  • Proficiency in Python, Bash or another suitable systems language, with automation experience using Ansible, Terraform or equivalent.
  • Experience with Git-based change control, CI/CD, monitoring, alerting, operational documentation and safe production change.
  • A reliability and customer mindset: incident response, root-cause analysis, recovery testing, continuous improvement and clear communication with engineering teams.

We'd love to see:
  • Oracle RAC, ASM, Data Guard, RMAN, Enterprise Manager, CDB/PDB architecture, Data Pump, AWR/ASH/ADDM, SQL Tuning
  • PostgreSQL replication and HA, backup and recovery, vacuum and autovacuum, performance tuning.
  • Elasticsearch, OpenSearch or Solr cluster sizing, shard and replica strategy, mappings, ILM, snapshots and search query optimisation.
  • Stateful services on Kubernetes or OpenShift, including operators, persistent storage and workload scheduling.
  • Enterprise storage and database I/O troubleshooting across SAN, NFS, object storage or software-defined storage.
  • Secrets management, cloud data services, and experience in a regulated or audited environment.
