General Purpose

Reporting to the Dean, the Marketing and Communications Manager is primarily responsible for developing and implementing the strategic communication plan for the College of Computational, Mathematical, and Physical Sciences (CCMPS), and for oversight of communication pieces/content for the College in print and digital format. The overarching goal of this position is to enhance the College’s profile as a leader in academics and research excellence and to support the CCMPS community through external/internal communications.

 

CCMPS is one of eight faculties at the University of Guelph and houses three Departments (Chemistry, Mathematics and Statistics, and Physics) and one School (Computer Science) with more than 90 tenure-track or tenured faculty members, more than 50 staff, and more than 2,500 graduate and undergraduate students; several major research centres and institutes, and advanced research infrastructure.

 

Working closely with the Senior Management Team (Dean and Associate Deans, Operations Director, Chairs/Directors, Dean’s Office staff) the incumbent is responsible for oversight and implementation of marketing, branding and communication strategies and activities that will advance the college’s priorities as part of the strategic planning process. On a day-to-day basis, this position is expected to deliver leadership to support the College’s reputation within the University of Guelph. The Manager oversees two full-time staff and co-op/temporary students, as applicable.

 

The Marketing and Communications Manager has significant creative autonomy and is expected to utilize various approaches as part of their communications activities and strategic oversight, in addition to motivating, coaching and leading their team in industry best practice.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Development and implementation of college strategic communications planning. Includes key performance indicators and strategic alignment with College objectives and University strategic priorities.
  • Oversight of digital media portfolio, including strategic direction of web and social media for College presence.
  • Oversight of marketing communications activities related to recruitment.
  • Develop story ideas and write news stories pertaining to College developments aligned with current events, interests, and relevant topics in coordination with central News Service and/or Office of Research.
  • Editorial oversight for college communications.
  • Produce marketing collateral that reflects the vision for and distinctiveness of CCMPS academic programs and research.
  • Lead internal communications on behalf of the college to keep internal audiences connected/informed, and create a shared understanding of CCMPS values, goals, and guidelines.
  • Provide strategic communications expertise and advice to CCMPS leadership regarding initiatives where communications is a primary or potential concern, such as speechwriting, contentious issues/crises, or emerging external opportunities.
  • Supervision of two staff as well as marketing communications co-op student/part-time seasonal students.
  • Primary contact with marketing and communications consultants or agencies, as well as University personnel associated with marketing and communications.
  • Identify and manage external suppliers, budget.

 

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field and 5+ years’ experience in a similar role; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of Canadian Press style guide and journalism best practices, advanced degree considered an asset.
  • Experience managing full-time and/or student staff in a professional setting, including performance feedback and training.
  • Exceptionally skilled writer and editor, able to create content quickly, creatively, accurately and for a variety of mediums while maintaining the highest quality.
  • Ability to understand and distill complex academic information into plain language.
  • Strong critical thinking and analytical skills.
  • Advanced knowledge and understanding of marketing and communications, media relations and strategic communications planning.
  • Ability to facilitate and work with diverse stakeholders, including faculty, staff, students, alumni, and executives/advisory board members.
  • Exceptional project management and organizational skills to meet changing and time sensitive deadlines.
  • Experience working in an academic institution is considered an asset.

The target hiring salary for this position is minimum and up to 96% of midpoint for the salary grade.
