The Mackinac Bridge on a sunny day with blue skies and trees in the forefront with the MDOT logo and the MDOT webpage address.

THIS IS A NON-CAREER APPOINTMENT THAT IS LIMITED TO 129 HOURS PER MONTH

Are you a student looking for real world work experience? Do you love working with data and enjoy activities like data analysis, data extraction, data visualization and exploring opportunities for data automation? Are you looking for a job that works around your class schedule? If so, the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) has the perfect opportunity for you.

MDOT's Travel Information Unit is seeking a motivated, detail-oriented student assistant to support a wide range of traffic data processing, reporting and analytical activities. This position provides hands-on training, professional level responsibilities and opportunities to explore both office and field operations. Maybe you’ve noticed road tubes out in the field, but did you know MDOT also collects transportation data using video analytics, magnetometers, microwave and infrared sensors, and weigh-in-motion systems? These advanced technologies allow the department to gather traffic, airport and micromobility data used for everything from planning the Gordie Howe International Bridge to designing safe and efficient detours during orange barrel season, to modeling air quality improvements that support environmental justice.

If you’re interested in field data and how meaningful analysis and modern data tools can help shape the future of Michigan’s transportation network, we’d love to have you on our team.

This position is responsible for providing support for the Traffic Data Management System (TDMS), including assigning historical traffic data within the TDMS software, data scrubbing, data analysis, data review, and data entry. TDMS is a commercial off the shelf software that is replacing the Michigan Department of Transportation’s (MDOT) legacy system. Four modules have been purchased: Traffic Count module (TCDS), Turning Movement module (TMC), the Non- Motorized module (NMDS), and the Highway Performance System Monitoring Module (HPMS) module. Additional duties include supporting Travel Information Unit’s Geographic Information System (GIS) data maintenance, processing, and integration utilizing ArcGIS Desktop/Pro, other ESRI software, and programming applications for reviewing, editing, geoprocessing, and analysis of traffic-related datasets.

The "Salary" listed above is a range that reflects the minimum rate through the maximum rate of the Student Assistant position.
