Summary20250620100644_logo.pngRaleigh Water - Water Distribution division is looking for an Equipment Operator to join our team. Equipment Operators are devoted to completing preventive maintenance, utility repairs, utility locating, participating in investigations within our water system and providing excellent customer service. The Equipment Operator also performs maintenance and equipment operation for the City’s distribution system by performing skilled activities in support of maintaining, replacing, and repairing water assets, such as services, mains, and fire hydrants, etc.
Work Hours: 6:30 am – 3:00 pm
This position includes rotating after-hours on-call responsibilities. When on call, you'll receive standby pay for 8 hours at your regular hourly rate. If you're called out to work during your on-call shift, you'll be compensated at the overtime rate as per our company policy. We understand that flexibility is key! Our on-call schedules as well as after-hours work requirements can vary based on seasonal needs and operational requirements. Therefore, the ability to work a flexible schedule is essential for this role.

Qualifying Equipment Operator are eligible for training certifications that provide stipends of additional 12.5% to base pay.

Installs, replaces, and repairs assets such as water services, mains, fire hydrants, valves, sample stations, and auto flushers
Serves as a second hand to the primary repair person for the crew
Works after hours on an on-call rotating repair call crew
Works after hours should work extend past normal shift
Assists in setting up and breaking down work zones, including signage and traffic control devices
Performs repairs on leaking, broken, or damaged system components
Performs yard maintenance daily, monthly, or as needed
Hauls equipment and materials to and from job sites
Monitors and ensures safe working conditions and environment; identifies potential hazards and initiates or coordinates corrective action to maintain safety; ensures availability, maintenance and operability of safety and work-related equipment; monitors processes and activities to assure quality
Performs semi-skilled or skilled general maintenance supporting City department(s) or maintenance function; selects proper maintenance tools and equipment for tasks; performs work following established safety policies and procedures and applicable codes and regulations
Performs inspections on heavy equipment to identify any mechanical issues. Reports needed repairs to the appropriate supervisor or perform minor repairs on equipment. Maintains equipment daily
Education and Experience:
High School diploma or G.E.D. equivalency and less than 1 year experience in light to medium construction equipment operation or related workOR
Any equivalent combination of training and/or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be transferable such as:
Landscaping: installer, maintenance, irrigation
Construction: grading, storm drain, site work, builder, plumber, any utility construction (including fiber installation), road construction
Mechanic: heavy equipment, HVAC, hydraulic systems
Farming: manual labor, equipment operating
Moving Company: labor, truck driver
General Municipal Worker: utility inspector
Tech School Student: mechanical
Firefighter: full or part-time
Licenses and Certifications:
- Valid North Carolina Class C Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire
- Valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 90 days of hire
Operating and driving heavy equipment such as a dump truck, tractor-trailer, tractor, flatbed truck or water truck
Hauling materials, supplies, equipment, and soil
Inspecting assigned equipment for mechanical readiness
Ability to collaborate with others in team assignments and projects

Work Environment and Physical Effort:
Medium: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Work Environment:
Work is typically performed in an outdoor environment, street environment (near moving traffic), at a construction site and in and around vehicles. Employees may occasionally be in confined spaces and warehouse or shop environments.
Work Exposures:
There is frequent exposure to extreme cold (below 32 degrees), extreme heat (above 100 degrees), moving mechanical parts, fumes and airborne particles and loud noises. Employees may occasionally interact with individuals who are hostile or irate and communicable diseases.
