About the Role

The Maintenance Mechanic I (HVAC) is responsible for installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, repairing, and servicing HVAC systems located throughout City facilities.

Working under the direction of the HVAC Supervisor, this position performs preventative maintenance, diagnoses system failures, repairs or replaces equipment, and ensures HVAC systems operate safely and efficiently with minimal supervision.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair commercial HVAC equipment. 
  • Replace defective HVAC components and electrical wiring. 
  • Test electrical circuits and HVAC equipment using diagnostic equipment. 
  • Reassemble and test equipment following repairs. 
  • Inspect HVAC systems to verify compliance with specifications. 
  • Diagnose heating and cooling system malfunctions. 
  • Perform preventative maintenance on HVAC systems. 
  • Maintain accurate work records using electronic work order systems. 
  • Maintain a safe, clean work environment. 
  • Follow all applicable safety regulations and industry standards. 
  • Maintain reliable communication while responding to service requests. 


We're looking for someone who enjoys solving problems, working independently, and providing excellent service throughout City facilities.

Successful candidates will have:

  • Experience installing and servicing commercial or residential HVAC systems 
  • Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic skills 
  • Knowledge of refrigeration and electrical components 
  • Ability to interpret written and verbal instructions 
  • Commitment to safety and quality workmanship 
  • Ability to use computers, tablets, and electronic work order systems 
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills 
  • Ability to perform physical work including standing, walking, climbing, bending, kneeling, reaching, and lifting up to 25 pounds

What You Bring

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma/GED with 1-3 years of hands-on experience providing commercial or residential HVAC installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, & repair

“OR” No High School Diploma/GED with 5-7 years of hands-on experience providing commercial or residential HVAC installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, & repair 

“OR” an Associate's Degree with one (1) year of hands-on commercial or residential HVAC equipment installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair experience

  • Valid Driver's License
  • Universal Refrigeration Recovery License (must be obtained within 1 year of hire)


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with building automation systems such as Trane Tracer and Johnson Controls
  • Experience with building trades (i.e. Carpentry, Plumbing, and Electrical)
  • Experience with computer software (i.e. iPads and/or general office equipment)
  • Prior experience with EAM or other work order systems
