Senior AI Engineer – (Land Services)

The Senior AI Engineer will design, develop and deploy AI-enabled solutions to support WSP’s Land Services business, working from India as part of a multidisciplinary team supporting UK and Ireland projects. The role will focus on translating real land, property, GIS, data management and project delivery challenges into practical AI solutions that improve efficiency, quality, decision-making and client outcomes. 

The role is suited to experienced professionals with hands-on capability in AI/ML engineering, Generative AI, Azure cloud environments, data engineering and solution delivery. The Consultant will take ownership of defined AI work packages, build fit-for-purpose solutions, support adoption by project teams and provide technical guidance to junior team members where required. 

The position involves close collaboration with WSP’s Land experts, Transformation and Digital Insights / Data & Decision Science teams, project managers, GIS specialists and wider consultancy teams to identify opportunities, prototype solutions, deliver scalable outputs and embed AI into day-to-day project delivery in a controlled and responsible manner. 

This role will support WSP Land’s digital transformation by rapidly turning ideas into practical AI solutions that can be embedded into everyday project delivery and enhance the services delivered to clients. 

AI Solution Design & Development

• Design, develop, test and deploy AI/ML and Generative AI solutions that address real business and project delivery challenges within Land and Property. 
• Build solutions using Azure AI Foundry, Azure OpenAI, Azure AI Search, Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), Agentic AI frameworks and relevant AI development tools. 
• Translate business problems into technical solution designs, including data flows, prompts, model selection, integration approach, success measures and deployment considerations. 
• Develop prototypes and production-ready tools that support automation, data analysis, document processing, reporting, project controls, land referencing and stakeholder engagement workflows. 
• Apply machine learning, natural language processing and LLM techniques to structured and unstructured datasets, including documents, registers, trackers, spatial data and project records. 

AI, Data & GIS Integration

• Integrate AI solutions with enterprise systems, APIs, databases, cloud services and existing business workflows, ensuring outputs are practical and usable by project teams. 
• Work with land, property, GIS, mapping and infrastructure datasets to identify patterns, automate repetitive processes and improve the quality and speed of project outputs. 
• Develop and maintain robust data pipelines and reusable components, templates, prompt libraries, code libraries and delivery frameworks for AI-enabled solutions. 
• Support data validation, model evaluation, version control, monitoring and continuous improvement of AI solutions deployed into operational use. 
• Ensure AI outputs are traceable, explainable where appropriate and aligned with agreed quality, security, privacy and governance requirements. 

Stakeholder, Project & Business Support

• Collaborate with Land experts across WSP UK, Ireland and India to identify opportunities where AI can enhance project delivery, improve efficiency or create new client value. 
• Engage with technical and non-technical stakeholders to understand requirements, explain solution options, manage expectations and support adoption of AI-enabled ways of working. 
• Identify business opportunities and translate operational challenges into scalable AI solutions that deliver measurable benefits for project teams and clients. 
• Prepare demos, technical notes, user guidance, knowledge-sharing materials and progress updates to support internal stakeholders and project teams. 
• Support business development activities, including contributing technical content for bids, proposals and innovation-led client discussions. 
• Maintain awareness of emerging AI tools, market trends, responsible AI practices and relevant standards, bringing practical insights back into the team. Mentor team on lessons learned and best practices. Drive innovation. 

Delivery, Coordination and Team Support

• Manage small to medium AI work packages with limited supervision, meeting agreed cost, quality, programme and governance requirements. 
• Coordinate with bid managers, project managers, digital specialists, GIS/data teams and senior stakeholders to prioritise requirements and manage delivery dependencies. 
• Provide day-to-day technical guidance to junior members of the team, including reviewing outputs and supporting skills development where required. 
• Support progress reporting, risk tracking, benefits tracking and internal coordination for assigned AI initiatives. 
• Contribute to improving templates, workflows, quality controls and knowledge repositories to build repeatable AI delivery capability within the team. 

Overall

• Organise and manage work in a professional and responsible manner, collaborating closely across multidisciplinary teams and supporting the Team Leader, Line Manager and Project Manager to complete tasks to WSP’s expected standards. 
• Maintain clear and regular communication with colleagues in India, the UK and Ireland on technical, project and day-to-day delivery matters; attend and contribute to team and project meetings. 
• Work within agreed project constraints, including time, budget, security, governance and quality requirements. 
• Take ownership of assigned tasks and proactively research solutions where required. 
• Support the development and training of colleagues in India to grow AI, digital and data capability within the Land and Property team. 
• Support Team Leader / Line Manager in resource planning, utilisation, team performance and development requirements where applicable. 
• Contribute to knowledge sharing in internal and external forums. 
• Ensure that Health & Safety, information security, privacy and responsible AI considerations are embedded into all work practices in line with company policies. 
• Undertake any other task assigned by the HoD / Team Leader / Line Manager. 

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Software Engineering or related discipline. 
• Relevant postgraduate qualification, professional certification or demonstrable specialist experience in AI, data science, cloud engineering, software engineering or geospatial analytics would be advantageous. 

Mandatory Skills & Experience

• 7+  years’ experience designing, developing and deploying AI/ML solutions in enterprise or project delivery environments; experience in infrastructure, consultancy, land/property, GIS, Geography or engineering environments would be highly valuable. 
• Hands-on experience developing and deploying AI solutions in Microsoft Azure environments. 
• Experience using Azure AI Foundry, Azure OpenAI, Azure AI Search and related cloud AI services. 
• Strong understanding of machine learning algorithms, natural language processing techniques, model evaluation and AI solution lifecycle management. 
• Experience integrating AI solutions with enterprise systems, APIs, databases, data pipelines and cloud services. 
• Practical understanding of MLOps, version control, monitoring, governance and deployment of AI solutions into production or controlled operational environments. 
• Ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, work with limited supervision and provide technical guidance to others. 
• Excellent communication, stakeholder engagement and client relationship skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical audiences. 
• Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving capability, commercial awareness and passion for innovation in AI technologies. 

Knowledge Preferred (Desirable)

• Microsoft Certified: Azure AI Engineer Associate (AI-102). 
• Microsoft Certified: Azure Developer Associate (AZ-204) or Azure Solutions Architect Expert (AZ-305). 
• Databricks Generative AI Certification or equivalent AI / data engineering certification. 
• Strong programming skills in Python, including experience with frameworks such as LangChain, Semantic Kernel, AutoGen, LangGraph or similar. 
• Experience with GIS platforms and spatial data tools such as ArcGIS, QGIS, FME or similar. 
• Experience applying AI and machine learning techniques to geospatial, land, property, mapping, infrastructure or project delivery datasets. 
• Experience working with Generative AI, large language models (LLMs), Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), Agentic AI and prompt engineering for real-world business problems. 
• Awareness of information security, privacy, responsible AI and governance requirements, including ISO 27001 and emerging ISO 42001 AI Management System standards. 
• Experience supporting UK or international infrastructure projects through an offshore delivery model. 
• Understanding of UK land referencing, land services, Development Consent Orders (DCO), Compulsory Purchase Orders (CPO), Transport and Works Act Orders (TWAO) or similar statutory land processes.
