Job Description
AECOM is seeking a Project Engineer to support major infrastructure programs in Sacramento, CA.
The Project Engineer will be responsible for supporting project delivery through proactive risk identification, analysis, mitigation planning, and performance reporting. This role partners closely with project managers, engineering teams, schedulers, cost managers, and program leadership to identify potential project risks, evaluate their impact on cost, schedule, technical performance, and execution, and implement mitigation strategies that improve project outcomes.
The ideal candidate possesses strong analytical and engineering problem-solving skills with experience supporting large capital projects, program controls, or infrastructure delivery.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
- Support the development and implementation of project risk management processes throughout the project lifecycle.
- Identify, evaluate, and document project risks related to engineering, construction, schedule, cost, procurement, and project execution.
- Perform qualitative and quantitative risk assessments to determine probability, impact, and overall project exposure.
- Develop and maintain project risk registers, ensuring risks are accurately documented, assigned, and regularly updated.
- Collaborate with project managers, discipline leads, and program controls teams to develop practical risk mitigation and contingency strategies.
- Monitor the effectiveness of mitigation plans and recommend corrective actions when project risks increase.
- Analyze project trends, performance metrics, and key risk indicators to identify emerging issues before they impact project delivery.
- Prepare executive-level risk reports, dashboards, and presentations communicating project health, risk exposure, and mitigation progress.
- Participate in project reviews, risk workshops, and lessons learned sessions to continuously improve project delivery practices.
- Support change management activities by evaluating the potential impacts of project changes on risk profiles.
- Coordinate with scheduling, cost, engineering, and construction teams to ensure risk considerations are integrated into project planning and execution.
- Assist in developing standardized risk management tools, templates, and reporting methodologies across the program.
- Escalate significant risks and issues to program leadership, providing recommendations for resolution and decision-making.
- Promote a proactive risk management culture across project teams.
Qualifications
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- BA/BS in Engineering, Construction Management, Project Management, or a related technical discipline, plus 8 years of relevant experience, or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Professional Engineer (PE) license.
- PMP, PMI-RMP, or other project or risk management certification.
- Experience supporting large transportation or infrastructure programs.
- Familiarity with enterprise risk management methodologies and industry best practices.
- Experience using project controls and risk management software (Primavera P6 Risk Analysis, Primavera P6, Microsoft Project, Oracle Primavera Cloud, Deltek Acumen Risk, Power BI, or similar tools).
- Knowledge of quantitative risk analysis techniques including Monte Carlo simulation, sensitivity analysis, and contingency planning.
- Experience developing executive dashboards and project performance reports.
- Ability to facilitate risk workshops and cross-functional stakeholder meetings.
