SummaryThe City of Roanoke is seeking a Street sweeper to serve on the Stormwater Division of Public Works. As a Street Sweeper with the City of Roanoke's Stormwater Division, you'll play a hands-on role in keeping the city's streets clean, safe, and well-maintained — starting bright and early each morning. Your shift begins with operating a street sweeper and/or dump truck during the early morning hours, when the streets are quiet and ready for a thorough clean. As the day progresses, you'll shift into a more hands-on phase, working alongside the street sweeper crews or joining the CBD (Central Business District)/Village Center crew. This part of the job involves semi-skilled and manual work — shoveling, raking, clearing trash and debris, and sweeping — all in support of street maintenance, with a focus on the downtown area.You'll work Monday through Friday, from 4:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., giving you a full day's work while beating the midday heat and traffic.
Beyond sweeping and cleanup, you may also find yourself behind the controls of a backhoe, heavy front-end loader, or skid steer, helping to level ground surfaces and support street or construction repairs. You'll be responsible for keeping your equipment in good working order too — performing minor repairs and adjustments as needed, and keeping accurate log sheets, checklists, and pre-trip inspection reports.
This role does require a Class B CDL. If you don't already hold a tanker (N) endorsement, you'll need to obtain one within your first 12 months on the job.
Because street conditions and city needs don't always follow a 9-to-5 schedule, you should expect some standby work — including occasional nights, holidays, and weekends. You'll also be called on to operate heavy and light equipment during snow removal, and to lend a hand during special events or emergency situations, which may include additional night and weekend work. From time to time, you may also be asked to take on other tasks as directed by your supervisor.
To be considered for this position, you'll need a high school diploma or GED, along with one to three years of related experience and/or training in a relevant trade area — or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

SUMMARY Performs skilled work in the maintenance of facilities and/or equipment and in the operation of motorized equipment.ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESmay include the following depending on the area of assignment. Other duties may be assigned.
Operates street sweeper, dump truck during snow removal, front-end loader and other medium to heavy equipment
Perform a variety of skilled and semi-skilled duties in the operation and maintenance of operating a street sweeper.
Gather and report work site information from inspections
Services and makes minor repairs and adjustments to equipment
Operates all equipment, both light and heavy in snow removal
When not operating equipment, performs general laboring tasks such collecting and removing trash and debris from city properties
Assists with event support, snow removal and other emergency tasks, including some nights and weekends, as needed
May supervise crew in absence of supervisor
May be responsible for fabrication, maintenance, and installation of traffic control, pavement markings and barricade signage according to City guidelines and uniformity.
May be required to wear some type of respiratory protection in the performance of their duties

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Depending on area of assignment, may require possession of a valid appropriate driver's permit issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia and/or a valid appropriate Class A, B or C commercial driver's license with specific endorsements depending on departmental requirements. May require Pesticide Registered Technician Certification.
