These steel rolls, that weigh as much as 50 tons, are of very high precision to be used for papermaking.

 

 

Position Summary:

 

 

Voith is seeking an Apprentice Machinist  to develop and support roll servicing activities and shop operations in a manufacturing environment. This unionized hourly position involves preparing, setting up, and operating lathes and other machining equipment to repair, machine, measure, inspect, groove, and manufacture roll components and related parts. The role involves work on both metallic and non-metallic materials. The successful candidate will work from blueprints, drawings, and shop instructions to complete work safely, accurately, and in compliance with specifications.

 

 

Key Responsibilities:

 

  • Prepare and operate lathes and other shop equipment to prescribed tolerances, including machining, drilling, boring, grinding, sawing, and related operations.
  • Perform work related to rolls, tooling, grooving, base layer machining, refinishing, and other related shop operations.
  • Inspect journals, cylinders, and roll surfaces, properly position and secure heavy rolls, and monitor machining cycles using measuring instruments and shop specifications.
  • Perform measuring, checking, layout, and tolerance control activities, and select the required materials, cutting tools, and abrasives.
  • Support roll repair work by checking fits, concentricity, taper journals, mating surfaces, and overall dimensional accuracy.
  • Fabricate jigs, fixtures, dummy heads, and roll accessories as required, and contribute to other shop work in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Operate the overhead crane and forklift when required, complete route cards, maintain good housekeeping, and perform other related duties as assigned.

 

Required Profile:

 

  • Experience operating lathes, machining equipment, or other machine shop equipment in an industrial or manufacturing environment would be an asset. However, we are prepared to develop the right candidate.
  • Ability to read blueprints, drawings, and written work instructions, and to work to tight tolerances.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and safe work habits in a production environment.
  • Experience with metallizing, overhead crane operation, or forklift operation is considered an asset.
  • Ability to work independently while contributing positively to the team and to the quality of the work delivered.
  • Proficiency in French, functional spoken and written English
