Summary

Performs a wide variety of tasks to support department fiscal operations; performs other duties as assigned.

The hiring salary for this position is $59,114 - $65,229 annually; full salary range for this position is $59,114 - $101,691  annually. Examples of duties
  1. Payroll Processing - Responsible for processing payroll for employees, ensuring compliance with payroll policies and procedures;
  2. Review and Process Payroll Information - Ensure timely and accurate processing of payroll data, including time and leave reporting, payroll payments, deductions, and retirement contributions;
  3. Maintain Employee Records - Keep detailed records for each employee to ensure correct calculations for health, retirement, taxes, and other benefits;
  4. Partner with Human Resources and other division - Work closely with Human Resources and Finance to resolve payroll-related issues and respond to employee inquiries;
  5. Support Process Enhancements - Assist in improving payroll processes and systems, help develop new procedures for efficiency;
  6. Stay Current with Laws and Policies - Keep up-to-date with office and county policies, payroll laws (such as FLSA and FMLA), and tax/benefit regulations;
  7. Provide Reports - Prepare payroll-related reports for senior management as required;
  8. Team Collaboration -  Work collaboratively as part of the fiscal team to ensure operational goals are met;
  9. May provide fiscal support through the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office to agency personnel, in accordance with policies and procedures;
  10. May process travel/training and expense reimbursement requests, prepare travel expense reconciliation sheets, maintain travel budget spreadsheets, and assist personnel in making travel reservations;
  11. May post time and leave to the master payroll schedule and/or proof time and payroll forms and reports.
  12. May review journals and complex subsidy accounts, and monitor bank receipts and receivables;
  13. May assist with planning, forecasting, formulating, and overseeing budgets while assessing current and anticipated needs and costs and consulting with office staff on availability of funds;
  14. May prepare cash receipts;
  15. May prepare disbursements;
  16. May reconcile general ledger accounts;
  17. May research and use financial information to prepare various monthly, quarterly, and year-end financial reports for county, state and federal government agencies;
  18. May assist in preparation of budget requests and compute salary and other accounting information;
  19. May prepare files, copy and scan various fiscal documentation;
  20. May research and complete financial forms, i.e. Journal Entry, Budget Amendment, and Charts;
  21. May assist in the preparation of grant proposals, modifications, renewals, reports, and special requests;
  22. May assist in the preparation of Procurement requests and transactions;
  23. May generate data for preparation of trial balances, general ledgers and maintain various double entry records.
  24. Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  1. Ability to gain thorough knowledge of St. Mary’s County Government and Sheriff’s Office policies and procedures;
  2. Ability to act as a representative of St. Mary’s County Government and St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office to the public;
  3. Knowledge of fundamental accounting principles;
  4. Advanced knowledge and practical application of Excel Software and other MS Office Product Software; 
  5. Ability to operate office equipment – copier, multiple phone lines;
  6. Ability to prioritize and multitask; ability to follow through with assigned tasks;
  7. Ability to keep accurate records;
  8. Ability to operate relevant computer systems, including hardware and software, and simple office machines.
Supplemental information
  1. Associate's degree;
  2. Three years or more of job related experience;
  3. Or equivalent technical training, education, and/or experience.

Additional Requirements:
  1. Must successfully pass background investigation with favorable results;
  2. Must pass a pre-employment drug test.

Work requires no unusual demand for physical effort.
