Responsible for operation of heavy equipment to maintain and construct streets Examples of dutiesEssential Functions:
  • Operates heavy complex motorized equipment over 26,000 pounds (front-end loader, track and rubber tire loaders, dump truck, backhoe, motor grader, track loaders, steel wheel compactors and scrapers)
  • Performs less skilled tasks associated with maintenance and construction of streets, such as patching, lowering manholes, putting in drainage pipes
  • Inspects and checks equipment before and after use, performs minor maintenance activities and reports   exceptional problems to supervisor
  • Frequently assumes crew leader responsibilities in coordinating the activities of maintenance persons, helpers, and/or other equipment operations
  • Helps train other operators and assists technical staff such as laying asphalt, drainage pipe, putting lime or bulk cement in sub-grade
  • May perform other skilled tasks, some of which may require knowledge of a specific field, for example, drainage, water and wastewater
  • Occasionally confers with customers regarding service problems and reports information obtained to supervisor
  • Maintains regular and punctual on-site attendance

QualificationsMinimum Qualifications/Acceptable Equivalency:
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Three years’ experience in heavy equipment in the construction industry or related field
OR
  • Any combination of related education, experience, certifications and licenses that will result in a candidate successfully performing the essential functions of the job
Core Competencies:
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to form and maintain effective relationships with coworkers and customers
  • Ability to work outdoors
 
Preferences:
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English
  • Prior three years’ experience in street construction and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of the field of maintenance and emergency repair of heavy equipment
  • Knowledge of methods, techniques, and safety precautions involved in the operation of heavy and complex equipment
 
Conditions of Employment:
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Class “A” CDL driver’s license with tanker endorsements OR must possess a valid Class C driver license with a good driving record and the ability to obtain a Class A CDL with Tank Vehicle endorsement within six (6) months of employment
  • Must pass a drug test, driver’s license check, criminal history background check, and social security number verification check
  • Must pass a physical examination
  • Must be able to work overtime as requested and be on-call for the department during extreme weather and rotation of schedule on nights/weekends

The essential functions of this position require the use of a front-end loader, track and rubber tire loaders, dump truck, backhoe, motor grader, track loaders, steel wheel compactors and scrapers ; wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) issued by City of Denton that may include gloves, hard hat, safety goggles/eye protection, hearing protection, steel-toed boots, and uniforms.
