Summary

Position Summary: 


Under the direction of the Student Success Coordinator, the Professional Tutor supports

the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of tutoring, academic

coaching, and academic support services within the Testing & Learning Center (TLC)

across Hawaii Community College.


The Professional Tutor assists with the recruitment, onboarding, training, mentorship,

and ongoing development of peer tutors and student employees by modeling evidence-based tutoring practices, providing guidance and constructive feedback, and

collaborating with faculty and campus partners to promote consistent, high-quality

tutoring services. The Professional Tutor also assists with the development of tutor

training materials and professional development resources to support effective tutoring

practices across the college.


In addition, the Professional Tutor provides individualized and small-group tutoring and

academic coaching through in-person and virtual modalities to students across Hawaii

Community College.



Duties and Responsibilities:


1. Provide individualized and small-group tutoring in English, writing, reading, ESL,

study skills, and related academic support through in-person, virtual, and hybrid

modalities.

2. Assist in the development, coordination, and delivery of tutor training and

professional development for peer tutors and student employees.

3. Mentor and support peer tutors by modeling effective tutoring practices,

professional standards, and providing coaching to strengthen tutoring

techniques, communication skills, and student engagement.

4. Assist with the onboarding, orientation, and ongoing development of peer tutors

and student employees.

5. Assist with outreach activities, classroom presentations, and promotion of

tutoring services.

6. Participate in assessment, program evaluation, and continuous improvement

activities to enhance tutoring effectiveness and student learning outcomes.

7. Attend staff meetings, training, and professional development activities.

8. Perform other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications:


1. Possession of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited four-year college or

university.

2. Functional knowledge of the principles, practices, and techniques of tutoring,

academic support, or student services.

3. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

4. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships

with students, faculty, staff, and individuals from diverse backgrounds.

5. Demonstrated organizational and problem-solving skills.

6. Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and general computer

applications.


Desirable Qualifications:


1. Bachelor's degree in English, Writing, Rhetoric, Composition, Linguistics,

Education, ESL, or a closely related field.

2. Experience working in a college learning center, tutoring center, testing center,

writing center, or other academic support program.

3. Experience developing and delivering tutor training, instructional materials, or

professional development.

4. Experience mentoring, training, or coordinating peer tutors or student employees.

5. Experience providing academic coaching, tutoring, or study skills instruction in a

higher education setting.

6. Experience working with students from diverse educational, cultural, linguistic,

and socioeconomic backgrounds.

7. Knowledge of evidence-based tutoring practices, learning strategies, and student

success principles
