Olympic College is seeking 2 part-time American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreters to support the instructional needs of the American Sign Language program. These 2 positions will work in direct support of one ASL faculty member and require a flexible schedule to meet classroom, instructional, and college-related communication needs. The ASL Interpreters will provide impartial, accurate, and culturally appropriate interpretation by relaying American Sign Language, sign systems, and spoken English for deaf, hard of hearing, and deaf-blind individuals. Serving as a communication liaison between deaf, hard of hearing, and hearing individuals, this position helps ensure effective communication and equitable access to college programs, services, and activities while advancing Olympic College's commitment to accessibility, inclusion, and student success.
Examples of duties
- Interpret complex academic, technical, and administrative communications involving specialized terminology and abstract concepts during classroom instruction, lectures, faculty meetings, committee meetings, student advising appointments, office hours, and professional development activities.
- Interpret college-sponsored events, including commencement, orientations, cultural events, student activities, award ceremonies, staff meetings/events, and community outreach programs.
- Interpret administrative activities including hiring interviews, Human Resources meetings, performance evaluations, safety training, technology training, union meetings, and other workplace functions.
- Review course materials, meeting agendas, presentations, and supporting documentation to prepare for interpreting assignments.
- Research specialized in terminology, technical language, and subject matter to ensure accurate interpretation of complex concepts.
- Identify unfamiliar terminology, acronyms, and technical concepts requiring additional preparation prior to interpreting assignments.
- Close caption visual materials allowing access for all student.
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Two years of experience facilitating communication between deaf, deaf-blind, hard of hearing people, and hearing people in a variety of settings
Preferred Qualifications:
- Current valid certification issued by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf and demonstrated skill for application of the RID Code of Professional Conduct
- Experience facilitating communication between deaf, deaf-blind, hard of hearing people, and hearing people in a higher education setting
- Two-year college degree from an accredited Interpreter Training Program
Please note that we are unable to sponsor visas for this position. Only candidates who are currently authorized to work in the United States will be considered.
Hourly employees must work 480 hours in a rolling six-month period to become eligible for health benefits. Hourly employees must work 70 hours in any five months for two consecutive years to become eligible for retirement. This is an hourly position scheduled to work up to 10 hours per week, with a salary of $31.79 per hour. At times the needs may vary depending on faculty needs during peak periods during the quarter. They are not initially eligible for benefits upon hire but could qualify for the following.

- Prior to hire, a background check, including criminal record history, will be conducted.
